SSKM HOSPITAL

IPGMER and SSKM Hospital (Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research and Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital(Full Form)), popularly known as PGI Hospital or in short, PG Hospital (Presidency General Hospital), is at the same time a highly recognized  Government Hospital, a Government Medical School, and a National Research Institute.

PGI Hospital was first established in the year 1707 and is constructed by the Council of Fort William. In between the years 1901 and 1902, the present Main Block was constructed, the Woodburn Block, the Administrative Building, and the Physiotherapy Building were built between the years 1902 and 1908. The Hospital was renamed after the great Philanthropist of Calcutta, Sukhlal Karnani in the year 1954.  
This Hospital is the oldest General Hospital in India, for the practice of modern medicine and meaningful research. Thus its also known to be a part of the World Heritage. 

Many great peoples were once laid their feet in this Hospital. Our beloved poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta was admitted to this hospital and then soon he died here. Our then Prime Minister, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the IPGMER and so on. 

It is funded by both the State and Central Governments of India.
