Things You Should Know about Worms and its Preventive measures

A Worm is a group of helminths. Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) is a significant public health concern in India. Around 68% children of 1-14 years of age (22 cores) are suffering in the country. Deworm day is especially dedicated to deworm all children (boys & girls) aged 1-19 years (enrolled and non-enrolled) at school and AWC to improve child health, nutritional status and quality of life.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India is responsible for providing all States and UTs the benefits of this program. Other stakeholders are Ministry of Human Resource Development, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministries of Panchayati Raj, Urban Development, Rural Development, Tribal Welfare, Drinking Water and Sanitation. In 2015, this programme was launched in 11 States/UT with the target of benefitting 10.31 crore children of 1 to 19 years whereas 8.98 crore children received a deworming tablet.

Worm infestation symptoms can be divided into 3 stages-
Stage 1

  • Abdominal pain.
  • Colic or cramping and excessive crying in infants.
  • Intestinal cramps.
  • Nausea.
  • Fever.
  • Blood in your stool.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Itchy rash.

Stage 2
If Worm larvae migrate into the lungs patient can suffer following problems-

  • Fever and breathing difficulty
  • Coughing and pneumonia

Stage 3
If Worms enter the small intestine and mature into worms and remain there to feed following Abdominal Symptoms can be seen.

  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Intestinal blockage - may be partial or complete
  • Partial intestinal blockage
  • Total intestinal blockage
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Restlessness
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Worm in stool
  • Worm in vomit

It is always advisable for a person to take serious preventive measure to keep himself or others free from worms. Following preventive measure can be taken at home-

  • Safe Water: - Always we must use boiled or non-boiled purified Water for drinking purpose.
  • Vector Control: - A vector is an organism that carries or transmits disease. So, we must prevent all vector to keep away worm infections.
  • Good sanitation: - Keeping good sanitation conditions is one of the best ways to prevent the infection of worms.
  • Pollution of soil with human faeces should be avoided.
  • Vegetable should be thoroughly washed with a mild solution of Potassium permanganate and properly cooked before use.
  • Fingernails should be regularly cut to avoid the collection of dirt and eggs below them.
  • Hands should be properly washed with some antiseptic soap before touching any edibles.

Apart From that followings natural home remedies can be taken
Coconut
A patient can simply eat a tablespoon of grated coconut every morning during breakfast to reduce the problem of intestinal worms.
Garlic
It is also a strong anti-parasitic that helps purge all kinds of intestinal parasites. Garlic has high amounts of sulfur, sulfur-containing amino acids usually have anti-parasitic characteristics. If worms are affected, make a paste of raw garlic and Vaseline and apply around the region. This kills the eggs and reduces the itch. If three cloves of garlic are eaten every day, its antifungal property also helps in getting rid of the worms.
Papaya

Papaya has long been used in Ayurveda to treat intestinal worms. Unripe papaya has been used widely in Ayurveda medicine for many ailments, including intestinal worms. The latex from unripe papaya fruit is rich in the enzyme papain, a known anthelmintic that helps purge intestinal worms. Papaya seeds also contain ricin to help expel intestinal worms. Papain effectively destroys roundworms. Grate raw papaya to extract its juice and drink a tablespoon of it with equal parts of honey and water.
Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds have a compound called cucurbitacin that has strong anti-parasitic properties that paralyze parasites. Either chews the seeds raw or make a powder of the seeds and mix with juice. After a few hours, take a dose of laxative to cleanse your digestive tracts.
Carom Seeds (Ajwain)
Carom seeds are another effective natural remedy for intestinal parasites. Carom seeds are rich in thymol, which obstructs the growth of parasites in the intestine. Ayurveda claims that carom seeds mixed with jiggery help treat intestinal parasites.
Neem (Indian Lilac)
Neem, also known as Indian Lilac, is one of the best natural remedies for intestinal parasites. Neem has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-parasitic characteristics that not only kill parasites but help remove toxins that are left behind by dead parasites.
Carrots
Rich in beta-carotene, carrots are quite effective for flushing intestinal worms from the body. Vitamin A has been known to dissolve parasite spores. Carrots are rich sources of vitamin A, vitamin C, and zinc, with the latter two helping boost immunity.
Turmeric
Turmeric is an effective remedy for intestinal parasites. Turmeric has many antiseptic, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties that help flush intestinal parasites. Turmeric has also been known to help reduce bloating and other symptoms of intestinal parasites.

Apart from this, be careful of what you eat. Unhygienic food, fruits, and vegetables that have not been properly washed can lead to worm infections. Eat plenty of anti-parasitic food like blackberries, pineapple, cabbage, almonds, and pumpkin seeds. Eat plenty of carrots, sweet potatoes and squash that boost your immune system. Eat a fiber-rich diet consisting of flax seeds, beetroot and such to cleanse your system. Probiotics like those found in dairy yogurt help in keeping worms at bay.
